Color blindness or color vision deficiency is the inability to perceive differences between some of the colors that others can distinguish. It is most often of genetic nature, but may also occur because of eye, nerve, or brain damage, or exposure to certain chemicals. The English chemist John Dalton published the first scientific paper on the subject in 1798, "Extraordinary facts relating to the vision of colours", after the realization of his own color blindness. Because of Dalton's work, the condition was often called daltonism, although this term is now used for a type of color blindness called deuteranopia.

Color blindness is usually classed as a mild disability, but in certain situations, color blind individuals have an advantage over those with normal color vision. There are some studies which conclude that color blind individuals are better at penetrating certain color camouflages and it has been suggested that this may be the evolutionary explanation for the surprisingly high frequency of congenital red-green color blindness.

a woman with color blindness marries a man with normal vision and gives birth to two daughters?
Q. the two daughters also marry men with normal vision then what is the percentage possibility of color blindness in the woman's grandchildren?
Asked by Mannan - Sat Oct 31 09:05:53 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The previous answer is wrong. Let's revisit the genetics. The woman with color blindness, a sex-linked trait, must have both of her X chromosomes with the defective allele since it is a recessive trait. That means that each of her daughters would have one of her X chromosomes, and both daughters would be carriers for the trait. All of her sons with her normal husband, getting their X chromosome from her, would be color-blind. So... next generation. All the daughters (granddaughters) would not be color blind as their normal father would give them a normal X chromosome. However, since there is a 50% probability that the granddaughters would get a defective X chromosome from their mother, then 50% would be carriers. For the grandsons.. [cont.]

How do you test a toddler for color blindness?
Q. I have a three year old son whom I'm worried about being color blind. His grandfather is color blind also, and even after working with my child on colors he has difficulty identifying them. Yet he grasps even more difficult concepts and tasks. Who do you go to test for this, an eye doctor or are there specialists? And are toddlers even capable of being tested for this?

A. You would go to an optomotrist for this testing and yes they are able to be tested. BUT it is common for children at this age to still not have a grasp on their colors, it is normal. If your child is constantly mixing up colors or can not differ between certain shades and sees it as a solid shade then their is a problem. A simple test you can do is lay out three circle cards, two red and one green, on the red draw a green smile on the other red draw a black fsmile, on the green draw a red smile face. If there is red/green (the most common color blindness) your child will see both the red and the green as the same color and will not see the faces at all or very well on the cards except the one with the black face. You can ask him to point… [cont.]
