The vertebrate retina is a light-sensitive tissue lining the inner surface of the eye. The optics of the eye create an image of the visual world on the retina, which serves much the same function as the film in a camera. Light striking the retina initiates a cascade of chemical and electrical events that ultimately trigger nerve impulses. These are sent to various visual centers of the brain through the fibers of the optic nerve.

In vertebrate embryonic development, the retina and the optic nerve originate as outgrowths of the developing brain, so the retina is considered part of the central nervous system (CNS). It is the only part of the CNS that can be visualized non-invasively.

The retina is a complex, layered structure with several layers of neurons interconnected by synapses. The only neurons that are directly sensitive to light are the photoreceptor cells. These are mainly of two types: the rods and cones. Rods function mainly in dim light and provide black-and-white vision, while cones support daytime vision and the perception of colour. A third, much rarer type of photoreceptor, the photosensitive ganglion cell, is important for reflexive responses to bright daylight.

Neural signals from the rods and cones undergo complex processing by other neurons of the retina. The output takes the form of action potentials in retinal ganglion cells whose axons form the optic nerve. Several important features of visual perception can be traced to the retinal encoding and processing of light.

What is being done to assist those with detached retina?
Q. Modern technology has done wonders- separating conjoined twins, providing artificial limbs and organs- even an electronic heart that has a six year battery. What is a detached retina and what scientific/technological advances have being done in that field during this century or the last one?

Q. Rod cells in the retina of the eye detect light using a photopigment called rhodopsin. 1.8 eV is the lowest photon energy that can trigger a response in rhodopsin.What is the maximum wavelength of electromagnetic radiation that can cause a transition? In nm In what part of the spectrum is this?

A. this relates to photoelectric effect minimum energy required to trigger photoelectrons from a metal (here rhodopsin) is called its work function. phi = work function = hc/ o = 1.8*1.6*10^-19 joule o = threshold wavelength = hc/phi o = 6.6*10^-34* 3*10^8/1.8*1.6*10^-19 o = 687.5*10^-9 o = 687.5 nanometer (nm) = 6875 angstrom (A) 3800 A (violet) - 7800 (red) is the visible spectrum === Color Wavelength violet 380 450 nm blue 450 495 nm green 495 570 nm yellow 570 590 nm orange 590 620 nm red 620 750 nm

Do floaters really mean that your retina is being detached or something like that?
Q. My optometrist keeps telling me to watch out for floaters and get my eyes checked immediately if I see them.I've heard that floaters are a bad sign of getting your retina detached.I've had them since 7 and have grown used to them.I'm now 16 and it's really starting to worry me.On my yearly eye exams and my frequent visits he tells me that nothing is wrong with my eyes.

A. Do you ever see flashes of black on the wall, or flashes of white, also on the wall. the vitreous humor shrinks and sometimes pulls up the back of the eye, the retina, This is called a detached retina and is a medical emergency. You need to see an Ophthalmologist immediately, and have your eyes dilated so the doctor can look at the back of the eye, the retina, the macula. I was watching television and saw a black stripe across the top of the TV screen, I immediately thought I had a detached retina, but it turned out I had had degeneration of the macula, the dry kind, and this had gone wet, meaning abnormal blood vessels were growing in the back of that eye in the macula, and were leaking. Had I had a injection of Avastin in that eyeball… [cont.]
